CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Miami Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and repair damaged roof decking throughout Miami, with most deck repairs and underlayment replacements running between $900 and $2,800 installed depending on the square footage and how much sheathing has to come out. We typically complete a deck repair and underlayment swap in one day once we’re on the roof. Most homeowners discover the problem after a leak shows up on the ceiling, or when a roofer points out soft decking during a routine inspection, but by then the underlayment has usually been failing quietly for months.
What makes CertainTeed underlayment different matters here. Their DiamondDeck and RoofRunner lines are engineered for high-heat, high-humidity climates like ours, with reinforced fiberglass mats that resist the kind of wrinkling and degradation that Miami’s ultraviolet exposure and salt air accelerate. When we open up a roof in Coconut Grove or Kendall, we can usually tell within a minute whether the original installer used a premium CertainTeed product or a bargain felt. The difference shows up in how the deck looks underneath.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
If your roof carries CertainTeed shingles, the underlayment beneath them is typically one of three CertainTeed products: RoofRunner, DiamondDeck, or WinterGuard (installed at eaves and valleys as an ice-and-water barrier, though in Miami it functions more as a secondary moisture seal). RoofRunner is the standard synthetic underlayment, DiamondDeck is the premium high-traction synthetic, and both come in different weights and roll sizes. The compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: CertainTeed’s extended shingle warranties often require the underlayment to be a CertainTeed product installed to their spec. If the underlayment fails and a warranty claim is filed, CertainTeed may ask for proof of what was installed underneath. That’s a checkable fact worth knowing before you let anyone put generic felt under a CertainTeed roof.
Identifying what you have is simple if you can see any exposed underlayment at the eaves or in the attic. RoofRunner has a distinctive gray or charcoal synthetic look with printed grid lines for alignment. DiamondDeck has a textured walking surface. WinterGuard is a thick, rubberized membrane. If you don’t know, that’s fine. Grant Whitlock or one of our technicians will identify it during the estimate and tell you exactly what’s coming off and what’s going on. We also work with GAF and Owens Corning roofing systems, so if your roof turns out to be a mixed install, we can match it.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Ceiling stains that appear after heavy rain. Water is getting past the underlayment and pooling on the deck before leaking through. By the time a stain shows, the decking underneath that spot is almost certainly water-damaged. Miami’s afternoon downpours make this the most common first sign we see.
- Visible wrinkles or waves under the shingles. Synthetic underlayment that wasn’t fastened properly, or that has degraded from trapped moisture, will telegraph through the shingles. You’ll see it from the ground as uneven spots, especially on south-facing roof planes that get full Miami sun.
- Spongy spots when walking the roof. If you or a contractor can feel a section of the roof flex or give underfoot, the decking has lost structural integrity. That’s not an underlayment problem anymore. That’s a deck replacement, and it needs to be addressed before more framing damage spreads.
- Granules in the gutters paired with damp attic insulation. Shingles losing granules is normal aging. Granules plus moisture in the attic means the underlayment has breached and the deck is absorbing water from above.
- Mold or mildew smell in the attic after storms. A functioning CertainTeed underlayment keeps the deck dry. When it fails, Miami’s humidity turns damp plywood into a mold source within weeks. That smell is the deck telling you it needs to come out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Miami, a partial deck repair with CertainTeed underlayment replacement typically runs $900 to $1,800. If we’re replacing full deck sections on a larger roof, the range moves to $1,800 to $2,800 depending on decking square footage and whether we’re installing RoofRunner or DiamondDeck. Here’s the breakdown:
- Decking (plywood or OSB replacement): $75 to $110 per 4×8 sheet installed, including removal and disposal of the damaged section.
- CertainTeed RoofRunner underlayment: $35 to $55 per 100 square feet installed.
- CertainTeed DiamondDeck underlayment: $55 to $85 per 100 square feet installed.
- Fasteners, sealing, and flashing around penetrations: $150 to $400 depending on how many vents, pipes, or skylights penetrate the repair area.
Every estimate is a written, line-item price before any work starts. No change orders, no surprises on the invoice. And every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we make it right, with a free second visit included if the repair fails.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your roof from the ground or from a ladder at the eaves. Look for the signs above. What you should not do is pull up shingles to check the underlayment yourself. Once you break the seal on a shingle and expose the underlayment, you’ve created a pathway for water that wasn’t there an hour ago. And walking a roof with possible deck damage is genuinely dangerous. Soft decking doesn’t always announce itself before it gives. A roof shouldn’t be something you worry about. That’s our job.
If you suspect deck or underlayment failure anywhere in Miami, call us at (850) 753-2996. We’ll send a technician whose name and photo you’ll receive before they arrive, and they’ll badge in with a photo ID at your door. You’ll get a written price and a straight answer about what’s actually failing.
FAQs
CertainTeed synthetic underlayment like RoofRunner and DiamondDeck is rated to outlast the shingles above it, typically 20 to 30 years, but Miami’s heat and humidity can shorten that if the roof wasn’t ventilated properly. Trapped heat breaks down synthetics from below, and we see that failure pattern often in older Miami homes without ridge vents. Call (850) 753-2996 and we’ll assess what’s actually on your roof.
Underlayment can be patched if the damage is isolated, but a patch is only as good as the deck underneath it. If the deck is sound and the breach is small, we can seam in a new section of compatible CertainTeed underlayment. If the deck is soft or the underlayment has widespread degradation, a patch will fail within a season and cost you more. The honest answer comes from walking the roof, which we do on every estimate.
Most Miami deck repairs with underlayment replacement take one working day from tear-off to final shingle replacement. Larger deck sections or roofing work around skylights and chimneys may run into a second day. We’ll give you a time window in writing before the job starts.
